The concentration of gaseous elemental mercury (Hg) was measured concurrently with relevant environmental parameters from a monitoring station located in the central area of the Ban-Wall industrial complex during March to May 2005. The concentration of Hg measured at hourly intervals during this study period was averaged to be 6.32 ± 8.59 ng m-3 (N=1,160). The observed concentration levels are thus found to be higher than those values measured typically at other urban locations (like Seoul) by approximately 20%. Using these data, the temporal variability of Hg was evaluated and compared across diurnal and monthly scales. The diurnal variability of Hg, characterized as the dominance of afternoon time period, suggests that its behavior is affected by man-made activities in the area. To learn more about the factors affecting Hg distributions in the study area, the results were also examined by such statistical methods as correlation and factor analysis. The results of those analyses generally suggest that the processes affecting Hg emissions and distributions in the study area should be distinguished from those important in other urban environments investigated previously.
