A Study on the Characteristics of Choehyun's Dance- Focused on 「Bisang」 and 「Heohangcho」 -Myung-sook KimProfessor of DanceEhwa Womans UniversityThis thesis is on the life and characteristic of works of Choehyun, mainly in「Bisang」and 「Heohangcho」. Choehyun was a dancer and choreographer pursuing for freedom and wholeness to the extent that he is called the last romanticist.The fascination of the dance of Choehyun is that it represents the beauty of space in every movement through movements among stillness. It looks like an image of a painter drawing a Korean picture, considering hand movements as lines and spaces. The effusive gusto arising from the body sometimes stops and sometimes continues. Then I can describe that there is patience persevered through deep sorrow and grief on his sculpturesque blue and white face.Looking into his masterpieces such as 「Bisang」 and 「Heohangcho」, I can find the following features.In his 「Bisang」 first performed in 1978, there are features first, sanghajitimsae as a leaping dance gesture, second, the quintessence of graceful dance of man, third, beauty and mirth represented through unrestricted spirit of Korean dance, and fourth, the exquisite harmony of music and dance.In his 「Heohangcho」 first performed in 1994, there are features first, the beauty of space throughout the work, second, quiet dance gesture like jwawooealmsae, third, the inner spirit of the artist freed himself from self-adherence.Taking a look at the choreographic background and the characteristic of the dance in Choehyun?s works, mainly in 「Bisang」 and 「Heohangcho」, I focused on the revaluation on his world of art. Since this is the first thesis on Choehyun who ended his life as the best dancer and choregrapher of the times, I think this is not enough due to lack of preceeding materials but I hope this will be the beginning point of various approach to his world of works.
