This thesis aims to investigate the characteristic of Sijo by the analogy of material, and especially this thesis concentrates on drinking as a material of Sijo. Drinking has long been relation with literature, and we can easily find the trace of drinking in many literature. So it is not difficult to find alcohol or drinking as a material in Sijo. According to the investigation of Sijo in ‘Cheongguyeongeon’, I found that the creators of Sijo were more interested in drinking than alcohol itself. And in most works which uses the drinking as material, drinking plays an important role, usually it implies the main idea of the creator. I think that drinking in Sijo has two meanings. the one is the desire of complete the grace of their life, and the other is the desire of avoiding the sense of futility. I think that there is a close connection between this tendency and the characteristic of Sijo. Sijo is a lyric and concentrates on the emotion in the absolute time. It reveals the true emotion of human, and the drinking has connection with the absorption. So I think that drinking in Sijo shows the characteristic of the genre.
