This article examines how Eavan Boland delineates Irish women’s marginality in the holistic nationalism in Irish history and literary tradition. Boland criticizes that Irish women’s reality has been excluded from the Irish canonical literature and romantically symbolized in light of male dominant nationalistic poetics. She tries to separate from the heroic world since women cannot be assimilated into the world of heroes, which has no place for women. Instead, she associates women’s physical and social spaces that are marginalized and devalued by the Irish poetic tradition with their repressed position in Ireland. She introduces spaces, in particular suburbia and domestic interior, which have been removed from the heroic nationalistic tradition. Within these environments, she redefines women’s realistic day-to-day life and their real emotions and feelings with realistic descriptions. In this manner, she reclaims of women’s reality and voice beyond the masculine sphere and constructs lost memories and emotions of women. In addition, she expands her subversive descriptions to laboring poor and rural women who have been doubly marginalized in Irish history and poetic tradition. Boland struggles to disclose women’s reality in the margin that has been silenced and repressed in the masculine tradition and access the otherness in terms of gender and class differences.
