The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of 8-week wheelchair training on upper body muscle fatigue in wheelchair basketball players (WBP), and compare these variables with able-bodied wheelchair basketball players (AB-WBP). Eleven paraplegic and nine able-bodied wheelchair basketball players were participated in this study. All subjects completed 3-min. stage graded maximal arm crank ergometer exercise (ACE), with exercise intensity increased 15 watts every 3 minutes. After 8-week wheelchair training, WBP was conducted ACE with same manner again. The results were as follows. First, Electromyography (EMG) analysis which was used to identify upper body's muscle fatigue demonstrated that 8-week wheelchair training has no significant effect on the Mean Power Frequency (MPF) and Median Frequency (MF) of WBP. And there were no significant differences in MPF and MP between WBP and AB-WBP. Second, according to exercise intensity analysis before and after 8-week wheelchair training, the decrease rate of MPF and MF in anterior deltoid in WBP before training was gentle compared with after training, and this indicates anterior deltoid muscle strength was improved through wheelchair training. Finally, although there were no significant differences in upper body muscle fatigue, 8-week wheelchair training showed positive change, and WBP with physically disorder has similar physical fitness to those of AB-WBP. Therefore, this study supports the conclusion that continuous wheelchair training participation is one of the most effective methods to maintain daily manual wheelchair propulsion avoiding the risks of muscle fatigue.
