The Predictors of Hope of Hospitalized Cancer Patients

Purpose: The study was to examine degree of hope of hospitalized cancer patients and to identity predictor which influenced hope. Method: The data were derived from answers to questionnaires obtained from 116 adult cancer patients admitted at one university hospital in J area during the July 1, 2004 to July 31, 2004. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS WIN 12.0 program. Result: The mean scores of hope of hospitalized cancer patients were 81.39. There were significant differences in hope by age, education, religion, monthly income. Hope was significantly correlated with self-esteem, spiritual well-being. The most significant predictor which influenced hope in cancer patients was spiritual well-being, self-esteem, monthly income. Conclusion: The hospitalized cancer patients to inspire hope appear that nurses need to help cancer patients to improve of spiritual well-being and self-esteem. If cancer patients who experience a religious struggle, the nurses would need to identify such patients and help them work through these issues as well as to receiving medical treatment by economic support.
