This study set out to measure the effects of foreignness of expatriates operating in the Republic of Kazakhstan through the use of a variety of variables and then further examine its effect upon subsidiary performance. The concepts of cultural dimensions, along with business and institutional system differences and finally language barriers and prior experience were believed to affect the degree of foreignness of expatriates. In this study we did not find significant effects of cultural differences or differences in business practices or institutions on the level of foreignness of expatriates in the Kazakhstan market. However this study suggests that the personal characteristics of expatriates, such as language barriers and personal experience still display a significant effect upon foreignness. This results mean when expatriates have no problems in communication and have prior experience with Kazakhstan country or people, they feel less foreignness in Kazakhstan market. It is useful for top managers in multinational companies to manage subsidiaries and expatriates in foreign market.
