This paper is to compare Islam with Christianity by analyzing the concepts of peace in the Qur’an and the Bible from the perspective of phenomenology of religion. Christian universities, including Pai Chai University, face a new era for teaching Christianity in a multi-cultural and multi-religious Korean society. First, I examine the characteristics and limitations of previous apologetical Christian comparison with Islam. Islam has a long tradition of different theological interpretations in terms of culture, language, and ethnicity. Second, dealing with the concepts of peace and holy war(jihad) in the Qur’an, I argue that Muslims can be partners of interreligious dialogue with Christians. Jihad means not only a physical use of violence for defensive war but also a spiritual struggling in the way of Allah. Third, even though we find many wars and conflicts justified in the name of God in the history of Christianity, the Bible has many messages for peace-making and nonviolence. There is a huge gap between Jesus’ teachings of love and their application to real lives. In conclusion, empathetic understanding Islam as a world religion will help us to make peace ethics for global community. Muslims are not objects of doctrinal criticism but our neighbors of love, caring, and sharing.
