The main purpose of this paper is to show that the hermeneutic turn of Heidegger’s philosophy during his early Freiburg period was enabled by his study of christian theology. Heidegger’s study of W. Dilthey and F. Schleiermacher was especially important: Dilthey and Schleiermacher led Heidegger to realize that the ontological meaning of Being can be analyzed only on the ground of hermeneutic understanding of the fundamental historicity of Dasein. Schleiermacher’s influence on Heidegger was much more decisive than Dilthey’s. According to Heidegger, ontological analysis of Dasein’s historicity should be free from theoretical interest. And he believed that Dilthey’s analysis of historicity was led by theoretical interest. In contrast, Heidegger found in Schleiermacher’s philosophy of religion an ontological understanding of historicity which is completely free from theoretical interest. Of course, this does not mean that Heidegger’s study of Dilthey was not important for the hermeneutic turn of Heidegger’s philosophy. It was Dilthey who led Heidegger to Schleiermacher’s philosophy.
