Recent critics of Wollstonecraft have protested that she was not feminist enough in promoting womens duties as mothers, that her work shows a bourgeois bias, that she was not able to transcend the discourse of female sensibility. In order to evaluate Wollstonecrafts achievement properly, however, we need to examine her place in the history of early modern European political thought, as well as to recognize changes and developments in her work. This paper reads The Wrongs of Woman: or, Maria, in particular, as a critical companion piece to the Vindication of the Rights of Woman. Wollstonecrafts Vindication calls for a cultural revolution; The Wrongs of Woman calls for a legal one. The argument that Wollstonecraft resorts to the family and to motherhood as sentimental substitutes for radical social change is impossible to sustain after a reading of The Wrongs of Woman, which takes up explicitly, and in a much more pessimistic vein, the tensions and unresolved problems of the Vindication. Wollstonecrafts Wrongs of Woman repositions the novel as a necessary tool for womens emancipation given the misconstruction of womens experience in the legal system and the systematic silencing of women in the public sphere.
