Southeast Asia experienced drastic social changes during the Western Colonial period in which the modern capitalism transmitted to the region in a full scale. Such social changes have been studied and understood mostly from the different ideological points of view, which narrowed down the scope of contexts, and thus resulted in lacking the theoretical substances to suggest any historical implication. This study presented a more comprehensive framework to understand the social changes under the colonial capitalism. With the case of Lower Burma, it exhibited the mechanism that the British colonial rule had created a social disequilibrium. The colonial politico-economic structure was inclined to the favor of market, and as a result, the behavioral foundations transformed the traditional community-oriented social behavior to an individualistic profit-seeking social behavior. The society of Lower Burma came under the control of a self-regulating market economy, which undermined the balance among the factors that propped up the society. The social turmoil in the later part of the colonial rule could be understood as the society’s efforts to correct the social disequilibrium.
