The Chinese economic boom and widespread military modernization cause concern amongst academics and military analysts. The economic concerns arise from the fact that traditional trading nations such as the United States (US) and those in the European Union cannot compete with China due to the relative labour costs and military concerns are based primarily on hardware acquisitions and indigenous developments. This paper utilizes recent evidence to argue that China’s economic rise should be seen as a global opportunity and that the military modernization is largely irrelevant with China unlikely to be able to challenge US military supremacy for at least 20-25 years. Further, although the China-Taiwan problem is undoubtedly a potential flashpoint, particularly when viewed alongside economic boom and military modernization, current levels of regional economic integration and significant US influence ensure that for the foreseeable future China will not emerge as a threat to regional or global security.
