The alliance between Korea and United States has experienced dynamic changes since the formation of alliance. However, recently major new developmental stage in ROK-US alliance is emerging after Presidents Lee Myung-bak and Barack Obama issued a major “Joint Vision” statement on pursuing a comprehensive strategic alliance in 2009. The statement made the transformation of the ROK-US alliance into formal goal of the global partnership between their administrations.
This paper attempts to analyze bilateral ties by using alliance theory in order to explain dynamics of ROK-US alliance. By applying various models of alliance theory to relations between the ROK and U.S., it will find proper models of the alliance and problems within the alliance. Besides, it will analyze the Presidents Lee Myung-bak and Barack Obama’s foreign policy directions, which will be required at a time when Korea-U.S. relations are evolving into strategic alliance.
Finally, this paper attempts to provide policy recommendations for the pursuing of ROK and US strategic alliance.
