This article is a study on the development of the Middle Eastern Studies, focusing primarily on researchers based in Korea. Although there have been previous studies concerning the status of Middle Eastern Studies, this is the first time such research is being conducted on a researcher-centric basis. This research focuses on publications of researchers from organizations such as the Korean Association of the Middle East Studies (Korean Journal of Middle East Studies), Korean Association of Islamic Studies (Journal of the Korean Association of Islamic Studies), Korean Association of Arabic Language and Literature (Arabic Language and Literature), and academic publications from universities such as the Institute of The Middle East Studies (The Middle East Studies) under Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Institute of Middle Eastern Affairs (Journal of Middle Eastern Affairs) under Myongji University, and Institute for Mediterranean Studies (Journal of Mediterranean Area Studies) under Busan University of Foreign Studies. The first publication of the six organizations stated above is the first volume of Korean Journal of Middle East Studies in 1980. Afterwards, a total of 304 researchers have published their articles through the 6 journals, although in reality, researchers actively researching the Middle Eastern studies have never surpassed 100 at any given time. The current demand for Middle Eastern Studies are heavily weighted toward energy and commerce while the studies being conducted are on language, literature, and sociological studies which have been previously recognized and criticized. Due to this conflict of interest between the demand and supply, researchers are currently working in fields that have little to no relationship with their academic majors. Therefore, this research is aimed to systematically analyze this phenomenon and to provide future support and guidance for the development of the Middle Eastern Studies.
