This research aims to study the Thai and Korean greetings using the two-way method of contrastive analysis and the comparative speech acts analysis theories. The data are obtained from Korean stylistic books, Thai theses and linguistics books. According to the study, the greetings are classified into two groups: daily life greetings and special occasion greetings. The first group covers first-met greeting, farewell greeting, mealtime greeting, gratitude greeting and apology greeting. The second group consists of home-visit greeting, patient-visit greeting, funeral greeting, congratulation greeting and New Year greeting. The study finds that moods used in both Thai and Korean greetings include descriptive, interrogative, imperative, persuasive and exclamation. The speaker uses descriptive mood to describe his/her situations; the interrogative mood to ask the listener his/her past and present information; the imperative and persuasive moods to bless the listener, and the exclamation to express his/her grief in funerals. The study also reveals that the interrogative mood is mostly used in Korean first-met greeting, while the descriptive mood is used in Thai, and the mood selection is varied according to contents and attitude of each situation. Polite expression is used in both Thai and Korean greetings. However, because of their grammatical complication, Korean greetings are more varied than those in Thai, which expresses the politeness through vocabularies, not structures. Both Thai and Korean greetings put the interest on health content than on weather, consolation, congratulation and delight. However, as Korea has encountered wars, most greetings are related to health and safety, while Thai greetings focus on weather. Greetings structures of both languages are almost the same. The difference appears only in mealtime and patient-visit greetings, while some greetings such as are not used in Thai.
