The purpose of this article is to analyze factor determining the rise of political parties in Thailand in the period from 1932 to 2012. It also is to analyze those factors causing the fall of these parties. Additionally described are relationships between those parties rising and those falling. Finally,conclusions drawn about the evaluation of institutionalization of political party in Thailand.
The problems identified through analyzing the level of institutionalization of political parties in Thailand during the said period with the investigation of the establishment and collapse of political parties are as follows.
First, party politics were subordinated to a powerful leader in consequence of continuing authoritarian regimes.
Second, the linkage between political leaders and the general public was loosened as many political parties were formed centering around a handful of powerful political parties.
Third, political parties have consisted of diverse political groupings with heterogeneous memberships.
36 한국태국학회논총 19-1호Fourth, the functions of political parties were not based upon their own policies or ideologies, but influenced by the self-interest oriented will of political leaders.
Fifth, the general characteristics for traditional political culture closely related to the development of political parties as before today as follows.
authoritarianism, social character of power-oriented, collectivism.
As a result, if Huntington's theory is applied to the Thailand situation, it is likely to conclude that Thai political party have nat yet passed through the first phase of factionalism and they have a long way to pass through th fourth phase of institutionalization.
Therefore, whether the establishment and accomplishment of the institutionalization will succeed or not depends primarily on how the problems and restraints can be overcome in the future.
