The fall of the Soviet Union and independence of Muslim Republics ofCentral Asia and South Caucasus provided Iran with both chances andchallenges. At first it seemed that Muslim Republics, which broke from Soviet Union, might bring Iran great chances to extend her revolutionaryclaims and economic interests. Dreams of Islamic revolution in these statesinvoked Ayatollah Khomeini, the leader of Islamic revolution, as much asworried Zbigniew Brzezinski, former United States National Security Adviserand America strategist. However latter developments showed that suchdreams and worries were far from reality. The breakdown of the Soviet Union and the independence of the CentralAsian and South Caucasus states opened new horizon before Iran to extendits influence towards northern countries. Iran's age-old cultural influence inthe region and the perspective of Islamic revitalism supposed to introducepotentialities to Iran that to push back the wall of containment which UnitedStates has imposed on it. But problems such as dissension and disputes thatseparate nations of the region from each other, calls for non-regionalpowers to involve themselves in the region. This fact brings Iran morechallenges than chances. Given increasing presence of western powers inCentral Asia and Caspian it is not easy to say whether the collapse of SovietUnion was more earn for Iranian than cost.
