In this paper the author first took up the study of Mongolian folklore in Japan and tried to outline the study of “The Secret History of the Mongols(SHM)” from the field of Mongolian literature. And then the author tried to introduce the study of medieval literature other than “SHM”, early modern literature, modern literature and contemporary literature in Japan. It is possible to say that the studies of Mongolian literature in Japan started from “Jinggisu Kan Jitsuroku”(1907), the first Japanese translation of “SHM” by Naka Michiyo (18511908). The translation of Naka Michiyo is a start of not only the studies of Mongolian literature but also the study of “SHM” in Japan. Afterwards, the study of “SHM” formed two field of studies like the Orient history and the Orient linguistics(philology). Moreover, Mongolian Buddhist sutras and Mongolian chronicles were researched from the viewpoint of the study of Buddhist literature. In addition, the study of Mongolian folklore appeared as a part of the study of ethnography that developed along with the invasion of Japanese imperialism to Chinese continent. However, the study at prewar days was not the one that the peculiar value of literature was taken up as a problem. And, the aspect “National literature” in the Mongolian People’s Republic(MPR) was lacked. In postwar days, after mongolists of USSR composed the history of modern Mongolian literature taking the history of Soviet literature as a model, the view “National literature” of MPR arose in Japan, and then the study of modern Mongolian literature started. It came to be done through the Chinese translation of G.I.Mikhailov’s “Brief History of Modern Mongolian Literature” published in Peking in 1958.“The Association for Mongolian Literature in Japan” is formed in 1998 and now Mongolian literature are being studied aggressively by small number of mongolists in Japan.(cf. http://www007.upp.sonet.ne.jp/mongolbungaku/)
