The study investigates objectives and instructional methods for developing musical concepts, behaviors and attitudes through music-related activities presented in the 2007 National Kindergarten Curriculum guidebooks for teachers. A total of 158 musical activities from 11 of the 13 guide books, published in March 2009, were analyzed for this study. The objectives of the musical activities were analyzed in terms of the musical concepts, musical behavios, and musical attitudes addressed. The instructional methods used in the musical activities were analyzed in terms of their relation to musical concepts and behaviors. The results indicate that the musical objectives rarely include musical concepts, and a majority of the musical behavior involves singing activities. Also, enjoyment of the creative expression process is mostly limited to being apart of musical attitude. With regard to the instructional methods employed in the musical activities, musical concepts are rarely presented and singing is the most frequent musical behavior. In the expression area, enjoyment of musical expression was most often presented. These findings suggest that the Kindergarten Curriculum Guidebooks should work toward a better balance of developmental, age-appropriate objectives and activities for teaching and fostering musical concepts, behaviors and attitudes in young children.
