Tourism industries has become the most important sector in terms of output and employment for Gangwon-do with the tertiarization of economic structure. In Gangwon-do, the share is 87.6% of total number of businesses in 2005. This study investigates the competitiveness of Gangwon-do's tourism industry using data published by the National Statistical Office. The Ganwon-do's tourism industries showed the lowest level in terms of labor productivity measured by sales per head, mainly due to the lack of economies of scale. However, the profitability was high in the entertainment industry. It is because of the economies of scale existing in the industry. The finding suggests that it is necessary to improve the productivity through education and training.
