The African Union, India and the Asean – three different entities of the Indian Ocean region, though, are miles apart, but have commonalities and capacities if entered into alliance can be as competitive as any other international organisation. The African Union (AU) is a continental organisation of 55 countries, India a major global player of the region and the Asean is a regional association of ten Southeast Asian countries with many emerging economies. The geostrategic positioning of these regions is interesting. These regions form the frontiers of the Indian Ocean with Asean countries to the east, India in the north and the large African continent to its west. Incidentally, both the Asean and the African countries are neighbours to the Americas, the Asean countries through the Pacific Ocean and Africa through the Atlantic Ocean. Flanking the Indian Ocean from all sides places them in an advantageous position to be able to control the Ocean. The article argues that these regions if form an alliance can have a strategic advantage and strategic control of the Indian Ocean, which is most crucial for maintaining security and the sustenance of the global trade. This unconventional connect can be a game changer not only in the Indian Ocean region but also in the global politics and global governance.
