Most of the construction equipments represented by an excavator still utilize the hydraulic system despite its drawbacks of low efficiency and loud noise because the operation with bucket such as digging and loading requires large actuating force. However, as the demands for low emission as well as low operation cost have been increased, new technologies including EHA and IMV are introduced for energy savings. During the past few years IMV hydrauic system is adpoted to commerical excavators. Since IMV with four 2-way valves can control the meter-in and meter-out restriction independently, there are the possibility of optimizing the pressure losses and saving energy with regeneration or recuperation operting modes. In order to realize the IMV, 2-way proportionally controlled valve which meets the system requirement developed in advance and normally it is the 2-stage to handle the large load flow. This paper presents the performance test results of the 2-way proportional flow control valve which is designed for the application to excavator IMV system. The main poppet position is controlled by the force equilibrium of pre-load spring force and pilot pressure of proportional solenoid valve. By applying the controlled solenoid current, we can confirm the static and dynamic flow control performance and the bi-directional flow characteristics. Next research subject is the build up valve block with four proportional flow control valves and the design and verification of IMV control algorithm for energy efficient operation.
