The aim of this study is to examine the rhetorical function of the witness motif in Isaiah 43:8-13 within the context of Isaiah 40-55. Isaiah 43:8-13 is well known for “a trial speech” in which God summons the blind and deaf Israel as witness against gods. However, it seems that their blindness and deafness are contradictory to the condition of legal witness for God’s uniqueness. One may ask whether they are qualified for being the witness of Yahweh concerning who Yahweh is and what He had done. In regard of this, among scholarship, several views have been suggested, yet the concept of the witness has been not clearly identified so far. This study thus examines the witness motif through the lens of the canonical reading of the thematic patterns in Isaiah 40-55. It is my contention that the witness motif functions not only to convince Israel of God’s promise for their restoration, but also to urge them to abide by the laws in order that they are able to serve actively as a witness who plays a leadership role in salvation of the nations. This paper first examines the semantic fields of the term עד ‘witness’ in the Old Testament briefly and suggests that the formula אתם עדי “you are my witnesses” in Isaiah 43:10 and 12 is to impart knowledge: “Return to me, for I have redeemed you” (Isaiah 44:22; cf. 55:7). Second, it investigates the immediate context, namely, Isaiah 42:14-44:23 in order to illustrate how the witness motif plays a crucial role in the course of Israel’s restoration. Next, it explores the main text, Isaiah 43:8-13 which suggests the possibility that the concept of witness is used in a passive sense that the servant Israel is experiencing God’s great power and uniqueness. Lastly, it presents the thematic progression of the witness motif within Isaiah 40-55 where the concept of the passive witness as a material evidence of God’s uniqueness is developed into the active one who has a leadership role to mediate between Yahweh and the nations, and argues that his mediatory role is accomplished through a Torah abiding life.
