Worldwide, increasing numbers of children are being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). One promising development in sensory enrichment for individuals with ASD is the multi-sensory environment (MSE) therapy. The purpose of this study is to raise the awareness of MSE in relation to interior architectural issues. That could contribute to the Korean society. Thus, this study investigates the social changes with increase of autistic children, the current MSE applications, and MSE research trends in South Korea. The present study proposed that architectural and design scholars need to prepare more than talk about this growing population of autistic children facing our world. Based on the current status of MSE in South Korea, it is urgent to advance in research on the design and application of MSE for individuals with ASD. Regarding the MSE research trends the research on MSE design and planning for children with ASD has been very scarce, while the literature on efficacy of MSE intervention has been appeared in recent years. Thus, more scientific research on MSE design remains a work in interior architecture field in South Korea. The design of MSE should be considered all possible aspects including sensory and environmental controllability of MSE by interior designers, not just commercial vendors and traders. The MSE is not just sum of sensory equipment, but the integration of diverse sensory design elements in interior environments.
