The purpose of this study was to analyze the influencing factors of parents regarding the financial and instrumental support to their adult children. The data used was the Korean General Social Survey from the Survey Research Center at Sung Kyun Kwan University. Samples included 477 parents who had provided financial support to more than one adult child. The research model was analyzed using multiple regression analysis.
The results showed that the number of family members living together had a significant impact on parent-to-child financial support, with the most significant impact on parent-to-child instrumental support. Average monthly household income(log) had a significant impact on parental financial support to adult children. The level of support from parents was influenced by whether the adult children reciprocated support to them or not. Moreover, parental financial support to adult children was exchanged with instrumental support; likewise parental financial support to adult children was exchanged with instrumental support from their children reciprocally. These results showed reciprocity in financial and instrumental transfers between parents and adult children. The mother’s employment status had positive effects on financial support, and negative effects on instrumental support to adult children.
These results showed that support from child to parent is an important variable affecting the level of parental financial and instrumental support to their adult children. Parent-to-child financial and instrumental support differed based on gender; in other words, fathers and mothers supported their adult children differently.
