Color occupies an important position in creation of Yimou Zhang’s films. Yimou Zhang often uses different colors to present personalities and the tendencies of destiny in shaping the characters. The clothing color of Jiu Er in “Red Sorghum”, and Song Lian in “Raise the Red Lantern”, had obvious changes along with the changes of the development on personality and destiny, and the audience were very impressive. Although Yimou Zhang’s new film “Shadow” has abandoned the use of bright colors, the film produced with the Chinese painting style, which greatly demonstrated Chinese characteristics. Even if he adopts the Chinese painting style of black, white and gray, he can fully use the intensity of Chinese painting to express personality, make the theme of the film prominent, and enables the audience to have a deeper understanding of the inner meaning of his film through the color pictures presented in the film.
