The present study aimed to confirm the mediating effect of self-absorption and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation on the association between covert narcissism and interpersonal problem among adolescents. The data were collected from 378 middle and high school students, and were analyzed through structural equation modeling. The main research findings were as follows: First, when higher scores on covert narcissism were associated with higher scores on maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation, increased interpersonal problem scores and higher levels of self-absorption were found. And self-absorption had direct effect on maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation. In addition, self-absorption and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation had direct effect on interpersonal problem. Second, self-absorption were found to significantly mediate the association between covert narcissism and interpersonal problem. And maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation significantly mediated the relationship between covert narcissism and interpersonal problem. Third, covert narcissism had an effect on interpersonal problem through the sequential double mediation of self-absorption and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation. Discussion of the significance and limitation of the present study and directions for future research were also presented.
