Buddhist funerals were widely adopted in early modern Japan. There was Terauke-Jidan (寺請·寺檀) System in early mdern Japan. But It is not that there was no influence of Zhu-Xi’s “Family Rituals”. In this paper examined that facts, through Feudal lord’s funerals and Confucian people’s idea. It is three things that became clear as follows.
Firstly, While The domain of Owari (尾張), Tsu (津) and Tokushima (徳島) based on Buddhist funerals, but They executed Confucian funerals at the same time. They adopted to use Buddhism together Confucianism. Especially, burials were influenced strongly by Confucian funerals. Secondly, Ansai (闇斎) School’s Confucian people advocated to use Buddhism together Confucianism too. They gathered, to use Buddhism together Confucianism was Zhu-Xi’s idea. The bases were the Preface of “Family Rituals”, and “Zhu-Xi’s quotations” vol.89. Thirdly, Ansai School’s Confucian people advocated to adopt “Family Rituals” in burials actively. There was an idea of “Filial piety”, to protect parent’s body enough.
