This case study was to identify the color characteristics of three cities in Germany and their city image. To examine the city image, Kevin Lynch’s 5 elements of city image were applied, which people use to construct their mental image of a city. In this research, the city image was investigated through the case studies. Also, this research started from the point of view that the city image affects the development and growth of the city, and the urban colorscape is a core value that satisfies both emotional and functional values by creating a pleasant and livable city. For this study, Heidelberg, Marburg, and Frankfurt were chosen as case cities that have differences in identity and are globally well known as cities tourism. By way of visiting and observing of the places, the research for the study was conducted during 10 days in October 2017. During field surveys, photographs were taken of 5 famous tourist destinations for the color images of Lynch’s 5 elements. The color of a city image was measured based on the following principles: path, node, landmark, edge, and district. The findings of the study are as follows: Images of Heidelberg showed medium values and hues of Y and YR in naturalness, elegance, and lightness. Marburg showed a dichotomy with medium-low values/hues and high values with strong or dark tones, but the whole city image was gorgeous and dynamic. Frankfurt showed coexistence of images of traditionality and modernity with cool colors of PB and YR. The results of the study are expected to effectively be utilized for Korean environmental color planning as benchmarking guidelines for the Urban Regeneration Plan and a better city.
