This paper is a philosophical exploration of a field of psychiatry, dissociative identity disorder. The author will consider this issue in three ways. First, it’s about the meaning of dissociative identity disorder and it can cause of social problems. That’s when dissociative identity disorder leads to crime. If a criminal suspect has several personalities and one of them does not know the other, it can be a question of whether the criminal suspect will be able to recognize his or her criminal responsibility. This issue can be considered based on the alter personality method and host personality method.
Second, it is about the philosophical question of dissociative identity disorder. Is it separate personalities or different aspects of a person’s personality? There is a philosophical debate between Multiple Person Thesis(MPT) and a Single Person Thesis(SPT). The author will consider the differences between these discussions. But what is the philosophical basis for these discussions? The author seeks to the issue of Multiple Person Thesis from Hume’s philosophy. Hume sees the self as a bundle of different perceptions. There is no nonmaterial simplicity and unity of the soul in Hume. However, the philosophical basis for Single Person Thesis can be found in Kant. The basis can be found, in particular, in Kant’s transcendental Deduction and Paralogism. For Kant, the soul has a simplicity and is nonmaterial and unextended. It forms the basis for the unity of personality.
Third, based on Kant’s discussion, we are going to discuss whether we can find clues to treat patient with dissociative identity disorder. How can we build such personal unity in clinical terms? Can such clinical methods be found in Kant"s philosophy? This is a question of how to integrate multiple discrete personalities. The author will consider how the basis can be built in Kant"s philosophy.
