Soccer is one of exciting and popular sports in the world. Thus, in the news about soccer games a variety of adjectives are used that convey positive or negative feelings about performances, players, skills, and so on. The purpose of this paper lies in exploring the use and characteristics of these adjectives on the basis of real data in the corpus of soccer news. This corpus contains English news about all soccer games held in the 2018 World Cup. The adjectives appearing in the corpus are extracted by a part-of-speech tagger and then divided manually depending on whether they describe the soccer-related entities positively or negatively. In addition, in accordance with the meanings of these entities they are classified into twelve categories. For example, in the phrase ‘a vital save’ the noun save belongs to the category specific action, and the adjective vital conveys a positive feeling. This paper comprehensively examines the positive or negative adjectives that are used in describing each category.
