This study analyzed the efficiency of 132 overseas long line and overseas purse seine fishing boats using SFA model. In the production function, the elastic Translog production function is used because it is less restrictive than the Cobb–Douglas production function. We selected the amount and value of catch as the depndent variables. Assuming the distribution of the error term in technical inefficiency to be different, each result was obtained. Also, when we assumed that the distribution of u<SUB>i</SUB> follows the truncated normal distribution, inefficiency determinants were analyzed by adding a environmental variable that was not considered in the production function. If the distribution of the error term in technological inefficiency was assumed to be a half-normal distribution and the dependent variable is the amount of catch, the DMU 95 is the most efficient DMU, and the DMU 110 is the most inefficient DMU. The average of efficiency was 0.996752 and the standard deviation of efficiency was 0.000012.
When the assumption of the error term was the same and the dependent variable was the value of catch, the DMU 95 was the most efficient DMU, and the DMU 32 was the most inefficient DMU. The average of efficiency was 0.997248 and the standard deviation of efficiency was 0.000012.
On the other hand, when the distribution of the error term in technical inefficiency was assumed to be a truncated normal distribution and the model introducing the new variables(fuel cost, entry fee, fishing method dummy variable) determining the efficiency, a different set of estimates could be obtained. Regardless of whether the dependent variable was amount of catch or value of catch, the most efficient DMU was DMU14, and the most inefficient DMU was DMU14.
The log likelihood statistics, AIC, and SBC values were compared to determine the suitable model for the analysis. As a result of the analysis, when the dependent variable was the value of catch, the model with the added fuel cost, entry fee, and fishing method dummy variables was selected as the most suitable model.
To summarize, this study was meaningful in that it analyzed the efficiency by fishing boat of overseas tuna fishery through SFA model. In addition, it is important to analyze the cause of the inefficiency further from the general SFA efficiency analysis.
