This study examined the traits of the fathers’ role as portrayed in picture books published since 2000. This paper analyzed 52 Korean and foreign picture books in terms of seven categories, such as housekeeper, child-raiser, companion, emotional supporter, bread-winner, book reader, and single father. The crucial role of the father is as an emotional supporter (48.1%), followed in order by companion (44.2%), child-raiser (36.5%), housekeeper (11.5%), bread-winner (7.7%), book reader (5.8%) and then single father (5.8%). Regarding the traits of the father’s role, in the first place, the father’s role as an emotional supporter can be divided into three types: the one who actively expresses his affection, who encourages and praises children, and who empathizes well with children. The companion role can be divided into two types: mating physical play and active leader of various play. The father"s role as a child-raiser can be classified into a simple care-taker and father for discipline. The father as a housekeeper means the one who is actively involved in house work. Another role of father is that of a bread-winner. The father’s in children’s reading activity in this paper involved reading books aloud or encouraging children to read. In addition, the single father in these picture books was assumed to be a widowed or divorced father and a father living apart. More picture books related to the fathers" role as a housekeeper and book reader need to be published.
