This thesis starts by introducing Thomas Kitting’s centering prayer and its theological and philosophical heritages. Understanding centering prayer and its philosophical and theological background, this thesis uses the method of theology of transposition, which interprets Christianity from the perspective of yogacara Buddhism. Although centering prayer as a popular interpretation of the traditional contemplative prayer of Christianity has contributed current Christian culture of meditation and quite prayer, it does not explain clearly why mental distraction and delusion take place during quite meditation. This thesis suggests that the root of mental distraction is attachment and it suggests an an adoption of yogacara Buddhism, especially 7th consciousness of manas-vijnana. Through this process, this thesis explains the root of delusion attachment and attachment produces many different types of delusion and distraction during meditation as well as everyday life, and if a centering prayer trainee studies seriously on yogacara Buddhism, and understand his/her attachment through manas-vijnana, he/she will get more productive achievement of centering prayer.
