Objectives: Falls are important health concern because they are associated with loss of independence and disability. Obesity is associated with an increased risk of falls. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the association among body mass index, falls and injurious falls in a national sample of middle-aged Korean. Methods: This study used data from 2015 Community Health Survey in Korea. A total of 86,863 subjects from 45 to 64 were included in the final analysis. Associations between demographics characteristics, health behaviors, chronic disease, fall, and injurious falls were examined using the chi-squared test and multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: In multivariable models, low-weight and obesity were associated with falls in only middle-aged women, not men. Among middle-aged women, low-weight was associated with falls(Odds ratio: 1.19, 95% Confidence Interval: 1.04-1.35) and obesity also was associated with falls(Odds ratio: 1.08, 95% Confidence Interval: 1.01-1.16). The association between body mass index and injurious fall was not significant. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that not only obesity but also low-weight are risk factors for falls in middle-aged adults. It is important to educate middle-aged women on fall prevention.
