The purpose of this study is to analyze the trend of color studies in Korea over the six decades to September 2016 from 1956, when research on colors commenced. To that end, 8,097 journal articles and dissertations published in Korea under the theme of ‘colors’ are used as the data for analysis. First, the embryonic stage laid the foundation for color studies in Korea. Second, the development stage witnessed research on colors commence in architecture and environment. Third, the extension stage was related to the standardization of colors and color words. Fourth, the maturity stage applied color studies as strategic marketing components. Fifth, multidisciplinary or convergent research on colors emerged. The analysis also highlights the trend of color studies in five disciplines as follows. First, the art and sport discipline was largely concerned with research on aesthetic colors. Second, the engineering discipline was mostly focused on colors from the perspectives of physics and physiology. Third, the natural science discipline was associated with research on colors in real life, e.g. colors of clothing and beauty products. Fourth, the social science discipline took sociological approaches to color words and instructional programs. Fifth, the medical science discipline adopted physiological and psychological approaches in relation to color therapy. Color science in Korea is a multidisciplinary science, evolving into an extensively convergent field of research. In particular, given the growing public interest in safety, health and food industry is forming a future trend, research on colors will further develop in agriculture, fisheries and oceanography as well as in medical science.
