This study focuses on the issues of belonging from the perspectives of female subjects in Passing written by Nella Larsen. She examines the cultural identity and psychological positioning of modern black women unidentified by difference from whites, locating narratives within the 1920s, the golden age of black cultural consciousness. Passing is the story of two female protagonists, who choose different identities in their belongings. Clare becomes white but she yearns for the African-American community in the 1920s Harlem. However, Irene sometimes passes and denies Clare to become a member of the African-American community. Irene thinks it may become a threat to her family and the African-American community. Finally Clare"s homecoming fails because of no admittance to outsiders into the African-American community. This study emphasizes the importance of the African-American female identity in Passing and Clare"s homecoming ends up in failure because the black community denies the outsider who lives in a border area between the African-American and white world from Larsen"s perspective.
