Even in the tumultuous era under the colonial administration of imperial Japan that Korea underwent, many sporting goods, books and sporting events were advertised on one of Korea’s major daily newspaper, Dong-A Ilbo, from 1920 to 1940. In the newspaper’s early publications, the most frequently found sporting goods advertisements were bicycles and running shoes, rackets; running shoes, however, were sold along with dress shoes at Western-style shoe stores at that time. It was in 1924 when advertisements of stores that traded in sporting goods for soccer, tennis and baseball as well as various sport outfits. There were also air gun advertisements, and it is conjectured that the wealthy class at that time were into hunting as their hobby considering the high price of air guns. However, when the Sino-Japanese War broke out in 1937 and Japan strengthened Korea’s wartime posture, the number of sporting goods advertisements dropped fast until 1940. Furthermore, the illustrations of advertisements were made to focus only on promoting patriotism for Japan, and sports were thus used as a means to improve the health and body strength of the subjugated.
