The integrity of the Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) is affected by the neutrons bombarding the vessel wall leading to embrittlement. This irradiation induced embrittlement leads to reduction of fracture toughness of the RPV materials. For this reason, during the anticipated operational occurrence of nuclear power plant such as reactor start-ups and shut-downs, the RPV pressures and temperatures are required to be maintained within P-T limit curves to prevent the non-ductile failure. The ASME Code Section XI Appendix G describes the detailed procedure for generating the P-T limit curves. However, subject to ASME Code Case N-640 of 1999, and subsequent endorsement of its use by USNRC in 2004 for the development of P-T limit curves without exemptions, later editions of ASME code are based in K<SUB>IC</SUB> curve. The Pre-2006 ASME editions are based on 𝐾𝐼K<SUB>IR</SUB>curve which is the critical reference stress intensity factor based on the lower bound of static, dynamic and crack arrest. In the republic of Korea, the present P-T limit curves for the operating nuclear plants are still calculated as per 1998 ASME editions. This paper does a comparative study of OPR1000 P-T limit curves using the pre-2006 ASME editions and the current edition of 2017 which utilises critical reference stress intensity factor based on the lower bound of static only, K<SUB>IC</SUB>.The results obtained indicate considerable decrease in conservativeness in P-T limit curves constructed using the current 2017 ASME code. The adoption of this paper will increase operational flexibility and plant safety for Korean Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs).
