Cinema studies are still called ‘film studies’. However it is difficult to define today’s movie as an art form based on celluloid films. Since the mid-1990s, digital media led the entire producing of movie, instead of films. Nowadays, movie became ‘files’ and ‘information’ rather than ‘films’. Therefore, cinema studies and analysis also need to respond to the condition of new media which is different from conventional ones. As part of this, I suggest introducing the quantitative methodology into cinema studies.
The reasons why the quantitative method is needed in cinema studies, are as follows. First, in order to overcome limitations of semantic analysis of movies, which has been relied on analyst’s subjective/critical perspective. Second, to expand the relationship of interdisciplinary studies. Finally, it needs to go beyond the limitation of canonical cinema studies which is based on movies produced in it’s own country and, so called, first world countries.
In this paper, I attempt to present some examples of quantitative cinema studies methodology that can be applied in practice. This paper devises methods in three aspects. First, script information-based studies, second, visual image-based studies, and finally, narrative studies as a pattern.
