Recently, the term ‘humanities’ has been used as a fashion in Korean society. The so - called ‘humanism frenzy’ is not a government – led, but is one of social phenomenon. Rather, the government is reducing support for humanities, and the lives of humanities researchers are becoming more and more depressed. Moreover, the socioeconomic conditions of those who study humanities are already at the bottom. Even if we look at the employment rates of graduate students in humanities and the employment patterns of doctoral students, it is easy to find out the problem is serious. It is very difficult to find a job unless it is in the form of a college professor or research professor. The government opens up just little employment opportunity to graduates of humanities.
Socially, humanities are called ‘hot winds’, but the lives of humanities researchers are getting tougher. What happens? There are several reasons in structure; Universities becomes industrialized, jobs are reduced in universities, governmental humanities policies without realistic support, and so-called ‘Korean Research Foundation System’ takes control academic societies with research fee. There are many reasons why humanities researchers are in crisis. Young researchers who are faced on the crisis need to more focus on how sell the history to public.
Perhaps the craze of humanities may be giving opportunities to humanities researchers. Despite the limitations of current craze, we should pay attention to the fact that the public is interested in humanities. Among them, interest in history, especially Korean history is getting bigger. That is why people can easily finds contents related to Korean history in social media space, YouTube and Podcast. The popular ‘knowledge retailers’ such as Yoo Si-min and Sul-Min-suk are already actively advancing into social media and circulating their historical knowledge.
The problem is that historians tried only publish books to make popular. However, it is hard to say that the strategy is effective at this point. Books already published by researchers in the publishing market have lost their popularity. In the present system, the most realistic method to history researchers to make history popularization is as follows. ① Entering into the social media market ② Printing and publishing the results of broadcast ③ Building and circulating a book-centered lecture (citizen lecture, university lecture etc.). Podcast and public book by Man-in-man-saek are good case of these.
Despite the efforts of researchers, it is hard to say that the results produced by the researchers have led to great results. Income, the most crucial thing, is not guaranteed. This “creation of a virtuous circle structure”, which mentioned the starting point of this article, has now begun. Some researchers are investing precious time for that. Social media is a new ecosystem outside the university where historians should live. Researchers should realize that they need to create a totally different research environment in the new ecosystem.
