Our tradition of raising Mongolian Interpreters in Sayeokwon司譯院 boasts of its long history. Mongolian study as well as the study of other Altaic languages has played an excellent role in developing the systematic genealogy of Korean. If traditional Mongology of Joseon Dynasty was for the diplomatic policies, modern Mongology can be said to deal with Mongolian as a subject of a historico-comparative view in linguistics, which reflects the modern academicity from the West.
By retrospective discussions on the Mongolian transcription which was a big issue of contemporary Mongolian linguistics, I looked back upon the things to be minded when constructing the materials and database of Written and modern Mongolian in the course of making tools such as dictionaries for the general study of Mongolian language. The main point is that it is important to understand the status quo of the Mongolian linguistics of the world correctly and recognize the particular position of our study.
My immediate objective is to compare the 1717 and 1743 editions of Qingwenjian淸文鑑 to present a method of transcribing Written Mongolian in contrast with the Conventional Transcription. The Mongolian vocabulary listed in Qingwenjian shows a systematic method of transcription based on the Manchu script with dots and circles, whose data were gathered from actual investigation for the Mongol folk villages of the time and reflect the phonological system relatively well of the Mongolian language.
