Purpose: Grounded on Goal Content Theory (GCT), the aim of this study was to investigate the longitudinal effects of intrinsic learning goals provided by exercise instructors on student` psychological needs, leisure engagement, and leisure ability in collegiate physical activity classes. Methods: In the experimentally-based, three-wave longitudinal research design, forty-two students from four exercise classes were randomly assigned into either the experimental group (n=20) or the control group (n=22). Those students completed the questionnaire throughout three-time point assessment―at beginning (Time 1, T1), at middle (T2), and at the end (T3) of the course of collegiate physical activity class. Repeated measure two-way ANOVAs were adopted to test the effects of intrinsic learning goals on students` psychological needs, leisure engagement, and leisure ability. Results: As results, students in the experimental group perceived the relatively-intrinsic goals greater than did students in the control group. Hence, students in the experimental group showed greater psychological need satisfaction, leisure engagement, and leisure ability than did students in the control group. Conclusion: The intervention successfully worked. These findings showed intrinsic learning goals delivered by the exercise instructor were effective to promote students` leisure engagement and to improve leisure ability because the intrinsically-oriented goals satisfied students` psychological need satisfaction.
