The purpose of this study is to identify Ichizo Kobayashi’s reference and suggestions for Japanese art by looking at his diary on art during overseas exploration, his writings, and lectures. Ichizo is a businessman who founded Hankyu Hanshin Toho Group and he was interested in the Japanese tea ceremony. Ichizo collected various handcrafts from East and West and the collected handcrafts are currently exhibited in the Itsuo Art amuseum. From 1935 to 1952, Ichizo visited Europe, the United States, and Asia and purchased art works at museum, pottery company, and antique shops. After expanding his knowledge, he recorded his experience and expressed his opinion after coming back to Japan.
In his writing, Ichizo suggested that western art works are highly advanced compared to Japanese art works with the high standard of living. Thus, he said that standard of living should be improved in Japan to enhance the level of Japanese art. Secondly, according to ichizo, overseas nations have much number of museums and art museums than Japan and local small cities have such museums and art museums. Thus, he claimed that Japan should establish art museums in local regions with the goal of having one art museum for one city. Third, he said that overseas art museums or museums have few high-quality Japanese art works and that the Japanese art works are exhibited in relatively poor condition. Thus, the foreigners are not fully aware of Japanese craftwork’s true value. Therefore, he claimed that overseas art museum should support exhibition of high-quality Japanese craftwork. Fourth, he said that the standard of Japanese art work’s value is excessively focusing on the tea ceremony while foreigners may not understand the tea ceremony. Furthermore, most of the tea ceremony items are too expensive and ordinary people may not access such items. Thus, Ichizo claimed that the tea ceremony items should follow the international standard so that foreigners and general audiences can appreciate the true value.
Ichizo claimed for quality improvement of Japanese art and globalization of value with above reasons. He also believed that the enhancement on standard of living may lead to improvement of global Japanese awareness. His viewpoint goes beyond mere art work exploration in artistic perspective. His suggested as above for cultural and national improvement in international perspective. His suggestions were made based on his insights on Japanese art works in integral perspective including culture, politics, and international politics.
