The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of immigrated foreign spouses who remain as foreigners in Korean society and to investigate the gender differences in this process. In particular, social resources factors and family/couple characteristics associated with nationality selection were examined. From the original sample of the 2015 nationally representative data on multicultural families, we selected information of migrated spouses and about family characteristics who entered Korea after 1995 (N=13,787). Results of separate analysis on foreign husbands and foreign wives show us that there are differences by gender in composition of factors that determine the nationality of foreign spouse by gender of foreign spouse. Education level, multicultural acceptability, and employment of spouse increase the possibility to remain as a foreigner, regardless of gender. However, it was confirmed that the associations between nationality acquisition and employment status, parental status, and age-education couple dissimilarity differ by gender of foreign spouse. If foreign wives have children, or the age-education couple dissimilarity index is high, or if wives are employed, foreign wives show a high tendency to acquire Korean nationality. However, in similar condition that, if couple dissimilarity index is high or if husbands are employed, there is a high chance for foreign husbands to remain as a foreigner. These results suggest that the social resources and family characteristics of foreign spouses in multicultural families may have different affects by gender, and it raises the necessity to examine various aspects of the nationality acquisition process in further research.
