The cartoon reportage is a genre of cartoon that especially expresses our reality and social problems. It has to be based on the reportages which mean the investigative journalism in English. The cartoonist in the cartoon reportage becomes simultaneously a messenger and a journalist when illuminating the reality. Therefore, the cartoon reportage succeeded in a suggestion of the new possibility of cartoon, whose role was just limited in the aspect of an entertainment, and the expansion of its territory in a non-fiction. Considering that the cartoon itself is a tool that is based on a fiction, the cartoon reportage is valuable to study.
《Un printemps à Tchernobyl》by Emmanuel Lepage, the french work chosen for this study, sheds light on today of Chernobyl. Influenced by the trip to Fuku Shima in Japan and suggested by his association named ‘Dessin’acteurs’, Emmanuel decided on the trip to Chernobyl and the work of cartoon reportage. In order to give a warning to people about the danger of nuclear power generation, he prepared his journey to the city with other artists in his association. However, what he witnessed in that city was totally different in comparison with what he thought before the trip. His work, 《Un printemps à Tchernobyl》was evaluated value in the aspect of expressing the reality of Chernobyl with the vision of existentialism.
Considering the remarkable elements of 《Un printemps à Tchernobyl》, this study finds the characteristics of cartoon reportage in terms of its way of story-telling and the messages. First, this study is concentrated on 3 different characteristics of cartoon reportage. Comparing the scenes in 《Un printemps à Tchernobyl》and other works of cartoon reportage by other authors if it’s needed, the study is organizing the special aspects of this particular genre of cartoon. Second part is the histories of ’Dessin’acteurs’ which is the association that participated together in this art work. Third one is the analysis of the work 《Un printemps à Tchernobyl》, which is related to the characteristics of cartoon reportage that are revealed in the first part of this study.
