With the effectiveness of Korea-China FTA on December 20, 2015, Korea and China immediately lifted tariffs on 138 and 262 items of agricultural products respectively.
In theory, tariffs` cut would have positive effect on the drop of import price and thereby the increase of demand for imported goods.
However, import statistics (2013~2017) of Korea and China on the immediate tariffs abolition items show the mixed results.
Even before and after the FTA, Korea`s import of immediate tariffs abolition items from China has declined every year. On the contrary, China`s import of them from Korea has continued to increase.
In short, the price effect of immediate tariffs cut(less than 5%) was not high enough to promote Korea`s import from China, but non-price factors such as consumers` preference, supply situation, demand for raw materials for feed etc. in two countries have influenced more.
