Since the middle of the 1990s, socio-econonuc environment of chinese urban society has been radically changed Due to the increase of urban unemployment and the reform of housing services and retirement insurance, and medical coverage, the living conditions of China`s urbanite are also changed In such circumstances, this study examines living conditions of Hutong residents and their responses to new socioeconomic environment through the analysis of job placements for urban residents, urban unemployment, operating conditions of individual enterprises and peddlers, income and consumption pattern, and housing condition. For this study, 64 housing units is surveyed by the method of direct interview during the summer of 1999 and 2000. The area of case study is Xixuianji and Xixinlianji Hutong in Xicheng-Gu, which is regarded as a typical Beijing Hutong. Some of the findings are : (1) although the unemployed rapidly increases, there are no adequate re-employment strategies for them ; (2) income level is equal with average income of Beijing city, but the share of pension or gift income is high. Related to consumption pattern, residents is burden with the increase of education and medical service expenditures ; (3) while above half of residents suffers from small space under 10㎡ per capita, they copes with this problem though self-built room and kitchen and separation of room.
