A finite element procedure for determining buckling loads and natural frequencies of space thin-walled beam is presented. It includes both shear deformation effects due to shear forces, restrained torsional moments and bending-torsion coupling effects due to unsymmetric cross section. The governing equations of motion are derived from Reissner principle. Elastic stiffness, geometric stiffness matrices and mass matrix are calculated using the isoparametric beam elements with 3 nodes, 4 nodes and 5 nodes. Many numerical examples verify the validity of the present study and show that critical loads and natural frequencies including shear deformation effects are slightly less than those without shear deformation effects.
