Aircraft, aerospace structures and LNG tankers are often subjected to severe heating rates during operation, resulting in temperature graidents in their structures. A common structural element of them is composed of orthotropic plates stiffened by diaphragms. Let us consider the case of a orthotropic plate stiffened by diaphragm where an infinite strip on the plate of constant width orthogonal to the diaphragm direction, and the skin plate is kept at the temperature to degrees greater than the temperature in the diaphragm of the structure. This situation gives rise to temperature stresses in the structure. This paper presents an exact solution for thermal stresses in the skin plate. The solution satisfies the equilibrium and compatibility equations. An Airy stress function is introduced to solve the problem. In the orthotropic case, all the equations presented must be degenerated into the expressions for isotropy when orthotropic constants are replaced by isotropic ones. The author has evaluated all the equations of orthotropy and succeeded in obtaining exactly identical expressions to the equations of isotropy which were derived separatly by means of L`hospital`s rule. The formal solution is expressed in terms of closed form. The distribution of stresses are shown in figures. It is noted that in the vicinity of the temperature field maximum stresses occur near the orthotropic steel plate stiffened by diaphragm.
